## At a glance

- Try the daily walk from the actual front door, including gates, crossings and the return journey.
- Distinguish a designated dog area from the rest of a park, beach or residential complex.
- Request the community’s current rules and inspect the home for your own dog’s needs before committing.

A home that works for you and your dog needs more than a terrace or a “pet-friendly” description. When comparing San Miguel de Salinas, Torrevieja and Orihuela Costa, examine the ordinary morning walk, access through the building and arrangements when you are away. Use local facilities as starting points for checks, not as proof that every nearby park or beach admits dogs.

## Walk the route you will use every day

Leave the viewing on foot and follow the route you would use for a short morning outing. Check pavement continuity, crossings, traffic, lighting and places where you can stop without blocking others. A nearby green patch on a map does not establish public access or a comfortable route to it.

San Miguel requires removing dog droppings and cleaning up urine in public spaces. [1] Include practical cleanup in your routine: where will you keep supplies, and how will you bring a wet or muddy dog back through the entrance? Compare the real route from each shortlisted address rather than rating an entire municipality as suitable.

## Inspect the designated exercise area

Torrevieja tourism lists separate large- and small-dog areas at La Siesta. [2] If such a facility matters to you, visit the exact dog area and read its entrance notices. Check gates, fencing, surface and how you would reach it from the property. Do not assume all the surrounding park has the same use rules.

Watch how the space works at the time you expect to visit. Is there room to wait before entering? Does the layout suit your dog around other animals? A designated area is an option to assess, not a guarantee of suitability or a reason to overlook the daily walk close to home.

## Check beach access as a separate question

Torrevieja tourism identifies Cala del Rocío as its designated dog beach. [3] For any coastal outing, check the exact location with the responsible municipality and read current signs. Do not extend permission from one named area to neighbouring beaches or assume the rules disappear outside the bathing season.

For homes marketed as close to Orihuela Costa’s beaches, ask which precise access point is meant and who manages it. Walk the approach, inspect steps and surface, and confirm current dog-access conditions before planning around swimming. A sea view and a practical permitted outing are different features to compare.

## View the home from your dog’s perspective

Try the entrance, lift or stairs and the space needed to pass neighbours. Inspect garden gates, boundary gaps and terrace railings for your dog’s size and behaviour. Look for a comfortable indoor resting place and a practical cleaning area. Outdoor space is useful, but does not replace a workable walking routine.

Ask for the community’s current rules covering shared gardens, pools, corridors and lifts. If you plan a gate, screen or other alteration, have your adviser establish the required permissions before budgeting for it. Confirm written terms rather than relying on a viewing comment that “everyone has a dog”.

## Rehearse summer days and occasional stays

Consider the walk at the times you would actually use it, including a hot-weather alternative. Look for shade and water arrangements, and check the weather before outings. A winter viewing cannot show how every part of the route feels in summer; seek a second visit or local information when this matters to your decision.

For a holiday home, plan arrival-day walks, secure access and care when you are absent. Identify veterinary services and check their actual opening and emergency arrangements directly. Ask a prospective carer how access and keys would work. These practical checks help compare two properties without promising that one neighbourhood will suit every dog.

## Questions buyers with dogs ask

### Does a large terrace make a home suitable for a dog?

Not on its own. Assess secure boundaries, indoor space, the entrance and the everyday walk for your own dog.

### Can I assume a nearby beach allows dogs?

No. Verify the exact area, the responsible municipality and current access conditions. A nearby designated area does not establish permission elsewhere.

### What should I request before making an offer?

Ask for the current community rules and clarify any proposed alterations with your independent adviser. Keep essential inclusions and agreed conditions in writing.
